Gloucestershire Dance
Gloucestershire Dance initiates, develops and sustains dance opportunities across the county for all members of the community. Gloucestershire Dance aims to ‘find the dancer in everyone’.
A grant of almost £7000 was given from the Local Network Fund to the group in early Spring to enable them to develop and teach an exciting new piece of dance to non-disabled and disabled young people. The disabled young people were drawn from the County’s special schools, main stream schools and other organisations that knew of young people who shared a passion for dance, regardless of their physical or mental capabilities. The aim of the project was, not only to learn new skills, have a great time and good fun, but to get across a message to Gloucestershire people that disabled young in the County can make a valid contribution to arts.
The piece of dance was showcased not long ago at the Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham, as part of the Gloucestershire Spring Festival of Dance. Hundreds of young people were given the chance to access the opportunity to observe and engage with this empowering new piece of dance.
A further exciting opportunity comes in July when the dance troupe will tour some of the Gloucestershire schools offering both performance and workshops.
It is believed that some 2000 young people as either artists or audience will have taken part in the production.
